Hello All!

I'm 27 year old single mother, with my first child.

When I went to the state building here in Alaska, they told me I had to go to My Native health care to get welfare. I told them it is my religion to breastfeed until two years of age. they told me I do not qualify because I'm not available for full time work. Same with the unemployment.

I just started getting food stamps from the State building a year ago, after I had my baby. The lady at the native health welfare office said I have to use a breast pump because she does.

Why can a couple with a baby get welfare if one parent is working? But not a single breastfeeding mother? I'm struggling here and get no child support. Please help!

On the form of the welfare page it states that they will not discriminate against any race religion... I called the human rights, they said the people were in the wrong for discriminating but I would have to file a complaint and to probably get a lawyer. they would then send an investigator and it would take up to a year to process.

We need Money for Mothers! Not for War!

While poorer nations have welfare programs that actually lift families out of poverty, the U.S. can't or won't.

As the text of the nation's cavemanesque welfare laws attests, this cowboy nation excels at punishing women who bear or raise children without a man:

One in four low-income single mothers nationwide — about 1.5 million — are jobless and without cash aid.

I agree we don't need money for war, don't vote republican if you want peace!

I'm not sure why you don't qualify for welfare? if you have a home address and a child you should. Who honestly expects a woman with a child under 5 to leave him/her with a babysitter and work full time. no matter if you are breastfeeding or not

Many single women with babies work and many women that breastfeed also work......they use a breast pump. You should be working like I did when I had three children. That is what is wrong with our country today, too many people want to sit at home with their hand on their mailbox waiting for a welfare check to come in. Go to work and support that child of yours! That child belongs to you, not the State.

You want the government to support you yet you don't want to follow the steps necessary. If you use a pump, your child still gets breastmilk (breastfeeding). Face it, once your child is two years of age, you will STILL not want to go out and get a job. You should have thought of these things before you chose to get pregnant and wished the government to support you.

"Welfare is suppose to be for those who need it."

- No. Welfare is supposed to give a hand up to people who are working to improve their situation, not lazy women who want the government to support them. It baffles me that you think you should be supported by the taxpayers and not have to work. Shame on you for using your religion in that way.

1)Fill out all the paperwork

2) Wait to see if they allow your claim

3) Wait for money to come in if you qualify..

Like many barriers that was put there to save money or benefit only certian people, sometimes it will take legal court actions to correct such ignorant policies or laws.
