I've been reading some of your responses to JC's questions and I'm in the exact same situation.

-I was contacted by Harvard and Cornell
-Have a 3.8 gpa and 1840 on my sats
-I have an extensive piano studio and LOTS of community service and get leads in all the musicals and dramas at my school

I never thought of myself as an Ivy league student until I found all these native american programs (i'm an enrolled member). I saw that you have a friend named Phil Grover at Dartmouth admissions. Should I contact him?

Thanks so much for your help, I hope you get this question Brings Light!

Hi! :)

I called Phil and left him a message that someone will be calling to talk to them about their application to Dartmouth. Give him a call and tell him what you've written here. You sound like a great candidate!

Have a great day!

My kids are obviously of African heritage...what is not known by most who go off "looks", is that they are enrolled members of my tribe ;) Interesting question you ask, however. I can not tell you how many times an afrcan american has told me they have "some indian in the family" or a great-great grandmother that was native american...and they never think that perhaps I won't believe them, based off looks ;) I don't believe them based of historical fact, statistics and dna studies, but thats besides the point... Anyways, several natives are mixed. My own siblings have blonde or red hair, I am the only "brown" one of the bunch (recessive genes are a an interesting thing)...

Hey, I'm 1/2 Native enrolled and in college. To be honest now adays affirmative action isn't really that big in pulling Native students in.

As for getting scholarships, most of the time the school won't give you a scholarship based on your ethnicity unless your gpa and extra curriculars are outstanding. So you should contact the tribe for scholarships, which by the way the less corrupted tribes only give to people proving at least a quarter of native DNA the majority of the time.

Good luck! Its nice seeing more Natives getting an education :-)

Jenny,

If you are an enrolled member of a Federally Recognized Tribe or Nation, then yes you should be contacting the admissions office and/or doing research on scholarships for Native Americans..Many colleges and universities have scholarships available specifically for Native Americans and they cover a wide range of options. And don't limit yourself to one college or university, check them all out. Most of these scholarships are competitive so get your information into them ASAP...

Here are two scholarship sources for enrolled native americans. If your tribe has a Higher Education program, the program coordintor should be able to help you find funding sources and apply to the colleges you'd like to attend. Good luck!! And good job on your S.A.T.'s!!! WOW!!!

Edit: colleges also like to see what you have done or your community and how you plan to use your education. Native American Scholarships are usually granted to those that plan on being or already are leaders in their tribal community ;)
