Question:
What is the politically correct term for black people?

Most people will probably answer "African American", but what if they are not in America? What about a black person in, say, Europe? White people are Caucasian. They are caucasian no matter what country they are in. So, shouldn't there be a more correct term for black people than African American?

This was not intended to sound racist, by the way. I in no way mean to offend anyone.

Ugh I hate politically correct terms.

Were white people. They are black people. I don't wanna complaints about how they "aren't really black-skinned"

Whites aren't white skinned either.

Since when is it OK to have a colloquial term for a majority, but not for a minority? That violates equal rights more than anything- we should be allowed to call each other what we wish, and it should be up to our own discretion to decide if what people call us is meant as an insult, or an objective statement.

To answer your question, I think african american is as close as it comes. Europeans are smart enough to not get caught up in PC bullshit, so they probably just call them "black" or "dark skinned".

This can be a touchy subject. At work, we're told that we should say African American (in our required Diversity Training) but I had a really good friend who was from Jamaica and didn't like that... People would call her African American and she'd correct them and say Caribbean American.

My friends prefer nowadays to be called black. It seems there's a trend to go away from African American and back to saying black. I'm always worried I'll say the wrong thing!

black people. i've never been to Africa. I respect it as the land of my ancestors, but I am Jamaican which means mixing. Everyone is represented here Tainos (native Am group) were first. then came Columbus and his european buddies, we kno the circumstances that caused African to be brought in and then after slavery was abolished Chinese and East Indians came as indentured laborers to work on the platations. Then Lebanese, Syrians, Jews and everbody came tumbling after. I love my country and culture everyone appreciates and respects everyone else and everyone is mixed one way or the other. That's why on our country's coat of Arms the motto says 'Out of Many One People'. Just curious why do ppl think that only black ppl live in jamaica or the caribbean?

Here is an answer for you. Oh your question did not sound racist in any way. I have beautiful daughter who is half black, so is her youngest brother. when some one ask them if they prefer to be called African - American? Their response is. I have never been to Africa. I am American.

They're African. Italians are Italian. Mexicans are Mexican. If a Mexican lives in America, he's known as a Mexican-American. Some people take offense to Africans being called "black", but no more than Europeans take offense to being called "white". I don't understand the confusion.

Black people. I have never once heard a black person deem this term offensive. The only people who are worried about it being offensive are white guilt ridden white liberals who are so afraid of coming across racist and insensitive that they don't even know how to approach a black person in real life.

I'm Black and i have no problem with being called Black, it just depends how you say it. There is:

"There was a Black guy at work today" (you are just describing how they look)

and there is

"You BLACK!", "You are so BLACK!"

I know it sounds weird, but it's all about how it's said. Black people , including myself, probably use the n word more than any other group, we really could be bothered less by that word, and sometimes even tolerate it coming out of a non-Black friends mouth, how much less 'Black'

i admire being called black, using fact African-u . s . a . of america is a insult to me. merely like Europe has English, German, and French So does Africa have there ethnic communities. i do no longer right here the term ecu -u . s . a . of america being utilized in media which may appear stupid. So Please provide blacks an identical appreciate. i might propose you to no longer be politically maximum suitable using fact blacks will see you as no longer being trustworthy.

I'm white, and I refer to people as "black." It has fewer syllables and is easier to say. :) African American is kind of silly unless it's someone who was born in one of the countries in Africa and then immigrated here. Not all black people are from Africa. Would you refer to someone from Jamaica as African American? Besides--if you believe in Panagea, we're all technically African American. Maybe we should just call ourselves "Panagean American." :)
