Are the Amish prejudice against blacks?

I asked that question due to a recent encounter. My husband is a truck driver, so, I decided to ride with him on one of his runs. We stopped at a Pilot Tralvel Center in Breezywood, PA. We decided to eat at the local Dennys. About 15 minutes after we were seated, a big group of Amish came in the diner. We got many stares from the group and we noticed that they spoke and conversed with t other white people that were in the diner (not Amish) but, when my husband went to pay for our food which is where they were standing, he said he came in eye contact with one of the Amish guys and he just turned his head. (I thought they didn't associate with those type of places or eat our food) He came back to the table and said he believed they didn't care to much for us. It just made me curious.

No, of course not. I'm not saying that no Amish people are racists, but as a whole they are not. They may have been familiar with the other people they spoke to. The various Amish affiliations are nearly 100% white because they are for the most part a closed society, meaning they allow very very few converts in to their religion, and they are descendants of white Europeans (German and Swiss).



The Amish commonly eat in restaurants and eat the same type of food as main stream Americans do.

It's possible. I wouldn't be a bit surprised. You would be surprised at how many small, religious communities of Whites don't like Black people. Or perhaps, not. I suppose Jesus never got around to explaining brotherhood and lack of stereotyping for our people. LOL



Crime will be the main excuse, but honestly, a person sitting down to pay for food is not a criminal and people hated our people before so many became criminals.



There is also the vague generalization of "immorality". I have heard this from many religious people of various faiths and ethnicities. This is usually from someone who caught a glimpse of a music video from someone like Lil' Wayne or somebody. This is truly hilarious when you consider that most strip clubs, porn empires, liquor stores and distributorships, drug cartels, etc. are all not Black.



It's like me seeing a White couple in a porn movie and then seeing one at the mall and moving away from them in fear.



I had an old mag (Nat Geo, I think) I kept where there were some Black Amish. The two women they interviewed were discussing how even Amish women gossip.



In any case, I am truly sorry. Stuff like that happens to me all the time by all kinds of people and it never ceases to amaze me.



I wish I had answers for you.



I know there must be good Amish too, first of all, just out of statistics, but also because my cousins in Pennsylvania go and buy desserts from them and furniture all the time and say they never have any problems.



Maybe these weren't the Amish that do the pies and furniture?

LOL my 2nd job is a Dennys and some amish people came in a couple months back like 15-20 and I waited on them and I got a very nice tip. Saying all Amish are the same is like saying all blacks are the same or all whites are the same, when in reality we aren't our religion or our skin color we have different personalities we weren't all raised by the same two parents.

I think this is a general question with a non-too-general answer. There maybe a few Amish people that are racist, but I have heard stories that have been passed down from my grandmother saying that it was the Amish in Pa. that assisted her great-grandmother to Niagara Falls.

I don't think so. They really are taught to love all. But I live near Lancaster, a big place for the Amish, and truthfully, there just are not a lot of black people there. I think it was probably more that you were unusual and unfamiliar to them rather than that they are racist.

Amish people keep to themselves a LOT. They forsake the "outside" World. So in Lancaster PA, in all likely hood, they probably don't see too many Blacks, and were gawking cause you're new to them. Also, given the big difference in appearance, and the tendency ALL humans have to fear what's different, they were probably a tad scared of you (I know they shouldn't have been, but again, it's human nature).
