Question:
Why do some people "sagg" their pants so low?

To my experience, I have seen mostly (some)black people sagging their pants....but its also people of other races trying to imitate this behavior with their clothing...and I dont get it. It's not a racial thing...I am just trying to understand how someone could possibly think that makes you look good/stylish/anything positive...

Can anyone tell me why people let their butts hang out of their pants like this? Maybe with a little history?

I'd be glad to answer this question, but first I must tell you that I do not wear my pants that way because it does indeed look foolish. Young black men wear their pants this way because it is seen as a sign of being 'gangsta', if you will. It means (roughly) that you are a part of the hip-hop culture, even as wearing a cowboy hat may show that you are into country music, and that whole scene. The whole thing began with prison, and the fact that some men in jail sag their pants. Imprisoned men sag their pants for two reasons: either they are available for sex, or simply because belts are not allowed to be worn by inmates, thus causing the pants to fall. The men who sag their pants outside of prison say that the fashion was donned for the latter reason, and not the former.

(Also, people of other races copy this style because they enjoy and seek to emulate hip-hop culture.)

I hope that helped!

That's interesting. I've studied fashion and art history and I never thought about where that specific style comes from. All I can tell you is that fashion is subjective. When people decide to wear something it is because they think it looks good or expresses them in a way that they like. It's kind of like goths. A lot of people don't particularly care for that style and I'm sure there are a lot of other styles people don't care for but I don't think you should judge. There isn't some panel deciding what is attractive or positive and what is not. That is a social construct. Imitation is natural. It doesn't just happen with people sagging their pants. It happens with all styles. So to give you a simple answer to your question, it is because they think it looks good. If you really want to have a deep understanding of why people gravitate to this style or certain styles, study psychology and make sure you don't limit your study to African Americans since, like you said, not all African Americans appreciate this style. Look for some kind of strong similarity between all the people who like this style and you should find the answer to your question.

It's all part of the style. You gotta have your "pants on the ground" to look cool now days. I get extra tips for practicing this style at work, and I work at a retail chain. I didn't know you got tipped for that.

I do that, but I have no idea why. Still trying to think... ... still don't know. Everyone does it at my school, some by accident and some on purpose. Why did guys a long time ago wear insanely tight pants? Just what was going on at the time.

I don't know, But I must admit to laughing out loud one time when I say this young man running to cross the street. He was holding and talking on a cell phone with one hand and had a soda pop in the other. After he ran a couple steps his pants fell down and he spilled his soda on himself when he tried catch them. It was funny.

probably started out of lower income people having to wear hand me downs that were too big- fashion industry people see this, exaggerate the trend, and market it back to the very people that started it.

same thing with safetypins on pockets and "highwater" jeans on rudeboys in england - the kids grew and couldn't afford new things.

granny dresses and the grunge look came from working class kids shopping at the salvation army

sad fact is that these trends are always started by kids who can't afford the designer versions of them.

you can trace almost any trend of the past 20 years or so back to the subculture that way.

hope that helps : )

The trend comes from ex inmates who didn't have belts or ways to make sure their pants didn't fall. One size fits all in some prisons.

The "street cred' " was based also on the look the ex inmate had and portrayed, tatoo signs, pants with no belts, etc..

It's been adopted by the hiphop community then, gangsta rappers having that kind of cred' .

Now why would others imitate it or why has it gained so much popularity I guess just like anything else out there: youngsters like to identify themselves to a group or icon. They dress like them and act like them. It's just a societal phenomenon, like rockers wearing black leather jackets with skulls on them and Hell spelled out...or european football players being kin on having longer hair than their male counterparts.

Oversized clothing is just part of that society aknowledgment and association to groups.

Who knows why fashion takes off. Personally I think its a prison look. All inmates pants sag. Remember when they were wearing Orange Jumpsuits....what must it be like to grow up where criminals are heros?????

Why do people wear all black with silver jewelry? why do girls wear lowriders w/ thier g-strings showing? Why do people wear those hideous crocs....

Its a mental disorder all caused by the governmental attempt to dumb down the American people.

Ever see monkeys try to dress themselves? They can never pull their pants up all the way because they don't have the mental ability to understand that they are not completly dressed. So they believe that since the pants are on they are mimicking the human but in reality they don't have enough common sense to pull them up properly, thusly is also the dumbing down of America when we glorify such ignorance as the norm and make our youth believe that it is popular and normal to mimic the traits of another race which to most of us is aprehensible and ignorant.

In reality , a government can't control the populace if they are intelligent and informed. The fact that we can cause many white youths to mimic the traits of another race and theeby make them ignorant and uninformed , take away their heritage and replace it with false history, and false appeasement, lies , a racial inequality for the whites which bennifit others at our scrifice, totol history replacement with false history and news media that propagandises lies and inventive stories , thusly you have succeeded in dumbing down America and making it easier to control them.

The pants to the knees is a claer sign to those in power that it is easy to control and manipualte a society to mimic one race in order to control the entire races.

Funny thing is we caught this young man breaking into an occupied home and we began to chse him down. I laughed so hard it hurt because the young man wore his pants and belt around his knees and this fool was trying to run. W caught him easily because a ran like girl with a dress around her knees. I say its a good thing because they can't run from the police and are actually helping the police in their aprehension because the fools can't run away fast enough because they put their gang dress above all other things including education and the ability to think rational.

All in all, anyone who wears their pants that low is a sure sign that there is some sort of mental disorder .

I am beginning to think they wear their pants so low because they are INSECURE about who they are.

A group of misfits who don't care if you laugh at them stumbling...in their own eyes they are finally COOL.

Don't believe the urban myths about homosexuality and jail. It is simply more comfortable.

Which type of underwear is more comfortable, boxers or briefs. Space = comfort.
