I was sitting on the bus and these school girls around 16-17 were sitting pretty close to me .So here they are mucking around using the N word just saying it to each other like yeah N back it up and just openly using the word around me.
Has it now become acceptable for other nationalities who aren't black to use the N word.

"Other nationalities ?" Were these girls foreign exchange students? Black is not a nationality, it sickens me how ignorant my fellow Americans are that they don't understand the difference between races, ethnic groups, nationalities, language groups, social classes, religions or the other walls we have created do divide us from one and other.

Well as long as we have black people openly using the word then getting upset when others do to would be hypocrisy.
This is what frustrates me with some blacks. Why can't they call other blacks by the name they were given at birth? Or their nickname at least (if they have one)? Yet the ones who use it are probably the first to get pissed when some person who isn't black says it.

I don't approve of anyone using this word, however in this case it sounds like a bit of black "hip hop" culture, that allows black people to use this word with each other has rubbed off on these young impressionable girls.
I am not excusing their use of the word, merely explaining how they may have come to think it was acceptable.

can i point out that it is NOT just white people using the word. the other day my friend who is Hispanic was saying the n word over and over again. please don't just say that it is white people who are using it frequently because all my friends who are white have not used that word. but my guess is to why all races are using it is because they want a reaction out of people and those girls were using it around you to see if you would explode and also because they want to see if they can get away with it, it's sorta like how people are using curs words more often? well it's mostly the same thing.

From the way it seems they weren't doing it openly to offend you. I hear tons of African Americans call each other the "N"-word for fun.
Some people think it's just cool to add that to their dictionary. I don't know how many people at work all me The little white cracker. As a joke. Is it offensive? Sometimes. Do I get over? Yes.

In Australia, there's the term wog to describe Italians and Greeks. The Italians have taken that on to describe themselves, thus deflecting the initial insult it was meant to be. Therefore it no longer is insulting to call most Italians wogs.

it's very easy to tell when someone is using that word in a bad way or not. but given the history of that word, i kinda wish everyone would stop using it...even black people, that word was created and used out of hate.
as for those girls using it, they're just gonna say it in front of the wrong person one day...
2009-10-16 22:40:50 UTC
It's been acceptable a really long time now. I guess if they see blacks and whoever else using it, they just use it too. EDIT: Oh and stop generalizing in your question. I hate that word just so you know.

It's amusing that it seems to be mostly white people saying things like "What's the big deal?" and "Why can only one group of people use that word?"
The fact of the matter is, as white people, we can never understand the hatred, malice, ill-will, and centuries of oppression that that word carries with it.
There is no epithet even remotely equivalent for whites because we have never suffered the same systematic denial of our basic human rights by another culture the way blacks have.

I find it particularly childish that the only reason some white people want to say the "n" word is because it's socially unacceptable to say it. I suppose it's their way of saying "Neener, neener. I can do it to! Yes I can!"
No one should say it. That way they can't use that silly argument anymore.

Why should it only be acceptable for blacks to use it? If kids are going to hear it in the music they listen to, chances are, they're going to start saying it themselves.

When blacks call each other N, whites think they're OK with that word. Perhaps if you stop referring to each other with that dirty word, whites will as well.
