Okay im having some major problems with my fiances family. They are full blown haitian people.. and iam spanish (from spain) and haitian and some puerto rican. I have never been exposed to my haitian roots..and dont much at all about haitain people. One day i was sitting down with my fiances sister and the subject of Haiti came up.. She asked me what i know about haiti and what my haitian friends have told me. I told her i only know things that are on the internet like most Americans.. haitian friends of mine have told me haiti is very poor and the people there are killing eachother in the streets.. most haitian people dont say too much good things about haiti! So i told her i know it the poorest country in the western hemisphere..it has nice beaches..and i read their AIDS popualtion is high. I left her house a lil after that and she seemd not made at me she said yeah she knows about some . The next day i have his mother calling him and calling me sayn i was talking bad about haiti.

People are always very sensitive when negative things are said about their country. I'm from the Caribbean (Trinidad and Tobago) and trust me, ALL Caribbean natives are incredibly patriotic. We tend to stick to our roots no matter what events take place on our individual islands. It's clear you did not intend to offend your fiance's sister....she probably just took it in the wrong way. Gather everyone together and talk to them about it.

Oh no....I never said it was wrong for YOU to say that. Haiti is a country in need. Everyone knows that. For instance...Almost half the population (of 8.7 million) is illiterate, it's the poorest country in the western hemisphere and the least developed country in the Americas. Sometimes it's just a bit more difficult hearing that from someone who did not live there....and contrary to what some people think, there are still some beautiful things about Haiti. Just like every other country that has problems.

They know there are bad things about their country. They are mad, because you insist on pointing out only the bad things. Every place has its' good points. I am sure it is beautiful. Iraq is beautiful despite the devastation of the war. Saudi Arabia is beautiful despite the sexism and it has schools that breed terrorists.

well unlike americans people from other countries really "represent" their countries, and mayby they found it disrespectful that you werent claiming your haitian roots. my grandmother is chinese and i dont know a damn thing about china other than all their products are poisonous lol!

my fiance is from st. lucia and his family is really proud and also defensive but i still make fun of their accents in front of them!!!
