Question:
Are Americans aware of the existence of other countries and languages?
2011-04-22 12:02:00 UTC
English is my third language and I speak it well, probably so well that when I write something and make a few typos (like who's instead of whose) people (Americans most probably) often feel free to make fun of my spelling and some even have the audacity to call me dyslectic (!!!!) just because kids in America learn to disambiguate these kind of words in preschool. I know for a fact that many Americans flunk learning a second language, not even mentioning a third. How dare they?!

Oh no.... america only country... no other language!

of course we are aware.

DO you know why people flunk languages? it's not because they are dumb....But because.

1. They may have trouble remembering what they learned. Especially if they are older.

Most people I have come across that know more than 1 language learned it from a young age. They either grew up speaking more than 1 language..or they decided to learn another language when they were young.

2. Most americans will probably never leave america..so they think they have no reason to learn another language.

You will always come across people that will make fun of you for some reason or another..if it isnt language, it may be how you look. or something else...

the key is to not really focus on these people. I know people who speak 2 or more languages...whos first language definitely isnt english..so I understand if they misspell something..or say something a bit "backwards". frankly it doesnt bother me... if anything..it bothers them.

I dont know how many times someone that doesnt speak english too well has apologized over something like..saying something a bit backwards...

I dont care!...It doesnt bother me! I understand what they mean anyhow.

I mean English is MY first language..and frankly even I screw it up.

Know for a fact that many Americans flunk learning a second language, no, your fact is wrong. Learning a second language is REQUIRED in Most American Highschools to graduate. But since most everyone speaks english in America most don't have the opportuntiy to keep up with it.

Oh and nice way to lash out at a whole nation instead of the people who actually insulted you, but instead of confronting them, you talk behind their backs on the internet. Big man, you are.

Yes that's pretty rude (&ignorant) to make fun of someone's english or grammar. Many of us think America is the only place in existence therefore everyone needs to kno how to speak english that comes on this site. Sometimes we dont realize there are others from all diff coutries that come on here.

Peace

Edit- Oh yeah Major Winters makes a good point! Ignorant people as well as ranting little kids who think they kno everything come on here insulting others when they cant even spell or form a coherent sentence so i guess we just resort to making remarks about their spelling & grammar & maybe sometimes along the way we make assumptions about people from other countries.

Well, when you make too many typos online, it seems as though you're just a little kid ranting about nothing, that's usually why Americans would just tell them to learn how to spell since they don't know how else to deal with them.

Americans are very used to speaking English. I am very afraid of all the illegal Mexicans who are turning the english speaking nation founded by the British that is America, into some third world sh*t hole. Americans dont want to loose their english heritage.

You're hilarious. We have to learn a second language just like everyone else. I know plenty of bi and trilingual speaking Americans. You are just singling out a select group of people. And I am definitely not flunking my German class.

They should be aware of it everyday as America is so multicultural and people are told to 'go back to their countries' on numerous occasions

yeah, most are indifferent though. myself included.

i always laugh whenever i hear europeans criticize us for speaking 1 language & knowing little about world affairs. in europe, you guys are 12 countries with very different cultures crammed into one space the size of our state of Texas.

we have english speaking canadians to the north, nobody to the east & west & mexico which nobody gives a sh*t about. on top of a much larger area in comparison to europe.

so its unecessary for me or most to bother learning a language just for the sake of knowing another & what goes on in the rest of the world is mostly irrelevant to me directly.

I speak three languages and can read some Russian. I still have to defecate every day. What's your point. AND.....let's hear your three languages!

Voulez-vous donner nous un example?

Yep!

Nope why should we every other nation can't measure up to the USA. We are the best why care about other little cultures when we have all of them here?

Had no idea, thanks for the info. I'll be on the lookout for these other countries and languages that you speak of.
