Question:
Black Racism/White Racism: An American Double Standard?
.

Is injustice for one, injustice for "all"? So many things have happened in the past involving white on black bigotry...but these are new days. Do people like Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson really help the nation as a whole by perpetuating hatred and racial division. Martin Luther King and JFK managed to bring people together in times that were worse than today.

When you take a case like the Don Imus scandal from last year...and the Duke Lacross players. Imus said "NHH" but honestly, black men have been calling black women that for the better part of 20 yrs. in rap music. And they are still making those raps even today, after Imus was fired. BTW, I AM A BLACK WOMAN (not white posing as Bk).

Personally, as a black woman, I hate Al and Jesse. They are the biggest racist jerks around and people are afraid to call them out on it. They preach hate and are forever keeping blacks at the victim status. I'm sick of their antics and each and every day they slap MLK in the face. He worked so hard to get us where we are and now leaders like this are tearing it down.

I agree with you about these lousy rappers. They suck. Why on God's green earth would you make music that degrades your women and talks about killing your fellow brother and glorifying thug life. What kinda crap is that??? What pisses me off more is that black people defend rap music like it's the bible. Give me a break!

For the life of me, I have never understood how any self respecting woman regardless of race could stand listening to rappers calling them h*** and b******. What is wrong with people? You are right, there is a double standard in this country when it comes to racism. For some reason some people think that if you aren't white, then you can't be a racist. Racism exist in every race and is not a one way street. The thing with Don Imus was ridiculous. Us white woman even say that we have nappy hair sometimes. If we haven't brushed it yet or if it won't style right we tend to call our own hair nappy. Nappy hair applies to all woman's hair no matter what race you are.The NHH comment that he made really wasn't racist, it was sexist. If anyone should of gotten mad about the comment, it should of been the woman's rights movements. I bet that JFK and MKL are turning over in their graves right now. MLK wanted us all to come together as a whole but you have people like Sharpton who makes everything about race and that is dividing us even further apart. Sharpton is starting protest in NY over a black man being shot by 3 cops but the funny thing is that one of those cops happens to be black!!!

I don't think it has anything to do with racism at all. Although Antonella is not a good singer and probably should not be this far in a singing competition, she is great for AI. Without her right now, well it would be kind of boring in my opinion. This year lacks the excitement that the other seasons have brought. Maybe that's why AI is so adamant about defending her, I don't know. It sounds like a double standard to me.

I have to agree with you, our nation has moved to exactly what Martin Luther King jr. was teaching against. M.L.K. fought and fought hard for equal rights, if he were alive today I certainly don't think he would be happy with what we have become.

This is just like the big brother/sister little brother/sister. When the little brother/sister comes along they get more attention more toys etc. Eventually the big bro/sis starts to feel unwanted and they express their opinion. Then the parents start to feel bad, and they start treating them equally, and showing even more attention to them because of the guilt. Now big bro/sis starts to figure out that they can get what they want by whining/using the guilt, and they end up a spoiled brat.

That's what our nation has become a bunch of spoiled brats sharpton, jackson, naacp = spoiled brats

We have all black schools, comedians that wouldn't have a joke in the world if it wasn't for race. I even remember getting in trouble in high school on my first offense solely because the black kids who were in trouble everyday called it racism.

The diversity laws in the work place are a joke too. I hire based on experience and proffesionalism. I have many many people come in my office with their pants hanging around their knees "I need a job yo" hell no there not getting a job! 99% of them were black so what! 100% of them were stupid.

Its not fair, and I still here racist comments from people. Its just comments! If they are ignorant than let them be ignorant karma comes around when there daughter marries a black man lol! Or white man because there is racism on both sides.

I also wanted to comment on some other comments I noticed.

Yes, I know very well there is plenty of racism in our nation, if it effects your kids, money, or life style than you should fight with everything you have.

If someone called you a craker, or honkey atleast they have the guts to say it to your face. White people have to call people ******* on the bathroom wall, or on the internet were they cant get there they can't get that a$$ beat. THATS A FACT!

(they even took my word out above, thats how stupid we have become)

As far as the negroe college fund and the NAACP its not that we should have the same program for whites its that we should have these programs for ALL less fortunate people.

One more thing that I hear as a white man that wasn't mentioned above is that black people are on welfare and done want to work blah blah blah. Let me tell you, There is a hell of a lot more "white trash" on these programs than there is black people.

The simple fact is we are two different cultures with different traits and there are ingnorant people who want to make something so simple into something so complicated.

The people leading our country are all idiots!

Personally, I think that Jackson and Sharpton care more about their egos than doing anything for the blacks. They both just find any excuse to get their face on TV. Jackson even gets involved in stuff that has nothing to do with blacks just to get attention.

Jackson always claims to have been a "friend" to MLK. In a number of interviews, MLK described Jackson as a "Hanger onner". In today's terms, a leech or wanna be. If MLK hadn't died when he did, Jackson would still be a nobody I believe.

When it comes to Imus, I won't deny that he is an idiot. What I will say is that black comedians make white jokes all the time and never suffer for it. One white guy makes a black joke and it is all over the media and he gets fired. It is a sad and all to common story.

The fact is that black people have a free pass to be as racist as they want to be with regard to how they criticize white people and other races. It was only 40 some years ago that Rosa Park had to give up her seat on a bus to a white man, and that event was a prominent one in the legacy of slavery. The biggest problem is that there was no comprehensive plan for black people to assimilate into the white society following the end of slavery. So they had to face poverty as a result of whites being unwilling to hire them, or they had to take the lowest paying jobs that did not require an education. Now the term "acting white" is used pejoratively among black youth who make fun of other black kids for any positive academic achievement. Well, whites should have helped blacks to "act white" following slavery so that they wouldn't have the societal and political problems they have today.

The fundamental disagreement today is that many (not all) blacks seem to express that white people are holding them back. Many white people (especially the middle class) are incensed by this because they have no desire to or the ability to oppress blacks, but yet they take the blame.

And you left out something very important. During the time frame of the Duke farce, and the Imus scandal, Channon Christian and Christopher Newsome were horrifically abducted, raped, tortured, murdered, and mutilated by several black men in Knoxville, and not one black person uttered a word of condolence. Put that on top of raising hell about seemingly trivial things like the Imus comments, and the kettle begins to boil.

The problem is in the different perception of the same events, between black and white Americans. OJ, Wichita Massacre, Jena 6, and on and on. It seems there will never be common ground and at this point I don't wish for it. I wish we could just peacefully separate.

Racism is a practice that the group in power holding all the chips perpetrates against others, so Black people dont practice racsim, some are bigots, I believe thats the correct terminology. I am a Black woman who digs Al Sharpton, Louis Farrakhan, Jesse Jackson, Barack Obama and yes, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright...yes, I LOVE a Black man unafraid to speak out against injustice. These men irritate the hell out of white folk who actually believe that there is no racism in America. The make them mad. I like that. Dissent is absolutely necessary in a country where Black people still have to live with discrimination and racism. You see, you cant equate Black calling white people crakkas with housing discrimination, job discrimination, the inbalances in the justice system, you see, racsim is ingrained into the fabric of the US, and some of those who have benefited from preferential treatment for centuries, now want to crush any criticism of that institutional racism they practice. Thats why, Black woman, YOU need brothers like Al, Jesse and Jeremiah. The truth is often ugly and nobody wants to admit that they have had advantages because of their ethnicity. If no Black person spoke up agaisnt the inequity, we wouldnt have the civil rights legislation. They said the same things about Martin during the 60's. He was an agitator. He was divisive, see, nobody willingly gives up power. You might not like the in-your-face style of these men, but that is necessary to get attention. Dont be embarrased, be proud. As far a Black and white comedians go, it's like this, I can talk about my family, youcant. I can call my sister ugly, you cant, I will kick your azz. What Don Imus said was an insult to Black women, and it was not the first time, also, it was the spirit in which his insults were said. They were meant to crush Black women in general. There is no excuse for the misogyny of Black men toward Black women. That kind of disrespect is a symptom of the illness that comes from the breakdown of the Black family unit. Those men probably dont have fathers who taught them how to be men and respect women. Another vestige ofinstitutional racism. Open you eyes girl. Think critically, dont just parrot what you hear in the mainstream media.

Yes there is a double standard. We whites have to be absolutely perfect in the way we put things or we are called racists. We cant say negroe, or colored, we must say black (at least until we are informed that something else is more in line or correct). If we decide we wont vote for a black man because of a lack of experience, we are racists. If we hire a spanish or white or oriental because of job qualifications, we are racists against blacks. There is the negroe college fund however if we had a white college fund advertized, we are racists. There is a national association for the advancement of colored people NAACP. If we were to start an organization forthe national assocation for the advancement of white peope, oh my god, wed be racists and run out of the country....also we could never start the white entertainment network and have our own tv channel. We tiptoe every day to be correct and not offend anyone while Rev Wright, Farakon (excuse spelling), Sharpton, Jackson, and many others can spout publicly and nothing may be said against it or we are racists. My ancestory is european and Im real glad that my relatives came over here and were not scraping sod in the plains of the volga river valley and didnt die with the thousands who starved to death. I wonder if the blacks appreciate the same thing. Are they glad they are here and not chasing some varmint in a loin cloth in Africa? Ive worked hard since I was 12 picking fruit, loading trucks, working in menial jobs and finally started my own business without a grant and became successful and now close to retirement. Its not easy for anyone, but the complaining and griping gets real old. The biggest mistake the white landowners ever made was the slave system. Im afraid we now will be paying for it for generations to come, and were not even to blame..but were here and we hear about it every day. It has to stop sometime. Thanks for your question..you seem like a nice person..hope you have a great life...thanks,

i agree totally with lana t. and some others on here. i don't think anyone benefits from this stupidity from anyone, period! and yes, there are LOTS of double standards out there. when i would walk around with my (at the time) black girlfriend the brothers would stare at minimum. this is changing slowly i've noticed young kids are doing it less and less. and there are some other double standards too maybe off topic but here goes; for example, if i'm at the public library and answer my cell phone, staff is right on my A. but i've seen black people just blabbing away with staff nearby that say nothing. now what that says to me is that whites are held to a higher standard and that is bad for whites, blacks and america at large-if you want a piece of the american pie you have to act appropriately and show some decorum man. it's implying that black people just can't learn how to act right in public, why bother correcting them -now when put that way doesn't it seem offensive?

Yes I have to admit it is a double standards but two different communities. When someone white usually make a negative comment to someone who is black such as the Rutgers women(example) that individual mainly perceived all black women are such nappy headed Ho's.When a rapper raps about Ho's We(not all) as the Black community can identify what type of women he is referring to and it's usually a woman with low self-respect for herself and not referring the educated and morally respected Black women. I know its wrong but at the same time two different views on each society.

I'm Black and I'm married to an Asian/Caucasian man. I find there is a double standard a lot when it comes to black prejudice and white racism. I have seen more blatant prejudice from blacks moreso than from whites. For instance, my husband met me for lunch a couple days ago. I work in Detroit. This black guy was walking down the street and as we approached him, you could just see the disgust and anger in his eyes. He looked at me like I was a traitor to my race. Even after we had passed him, he continued to turn around and just glare at us. This sort of thing happens a lot when we are around blacks. I've never had this happen with whites. We get stared at on occasion, but the stare is brief and it doesn't look like they want to beat our a**.

Just a personal experience. Hope it sheds some light. Yes, there seems to be a double-standard, because if it was a white man that did that to us, it would have appeared to be worse for some reason. It almost seems like many of us blacks feel like we are justified in being prejudiced. It kind of makes us look like hypocrites and diminishes our credibility when we scream racism.

Very interesting points you make.

I used to hang out with black friends. They called each other "N" all the time. When I did it at a party, I got heat from it (not from my friends, who backed me up). It is strange - somehow it's a term of affection coming from another black person. I agree with Richard Pryor that people should stop using the word in conversation.

I think Nixon's drug war had an awful impact on the black community. Nixon even admitted to his aides that his war on drugs was aimed at the black community. This is very evident in the disproportionately stiff sentences given to possessors of crack cocaine vs. possessors of powdered cocaine.

And it's true that juries give stiffer penalties to black men than to white men for the same crime. I notice that black women are more accepted than black men are in the work place - teenage black males have a reputation, deserved or not, for being loud, rude and hostile.

I sincerely hope Obama becomes our next President. I think his presidency would do a great deal to heal racial tensions in the country.

Whites started racism, not blacks. I personally believe that racism is always wrong no matter what side it comes from, yet I believe that Black racists at least have historical reasons not to trust whites, whreas whites never had any reason to demean blacks. I don't justify black racists of course, but I do understand the reason why they may still be angry at whites.

I'm white and have a black bf that I adore; and hope that racism will one day disappear from this Earth, but as long as ignorance and prejudice will keep ruling the world, there won't be a sigle chance for us to eliminate racism unfortunately.

So, we should just fight ignorance and teach our children that w're all the same.

yeah, theres a double standard. when whites discriminate, its a hate crime and we're racists. when blacks call us "cracker" and honky, among other things, it's okay because of past discrimination. whites have to answer to racist al sharpton, but it's alright when their own kind does the majority of the discriminating. if we discriminate we're KKK, but if blacks do, they're rappers.. sharpton is what's wrong with the world.

Yes, yes white ppl are oppressed, poor white ppl. Make sure you go out of your way to help those poor ppl who have it so hard in this society.

Make sure you criticize blacks every chance you get (especially black men) and no one white (especially NOT white men). I mean that's the only fair thing to do.
