I want to be a freemason and a Shriner. I'm trying to dispel some of these conspiracies told by religious cooks and others. Any Shriners out there that can explain this? Thank You

It's a bit complicated- there is a copy of the Bible on the altar in my shrine, but also a copy of the Koran and a copy of the Vedas. You have to remember that the Ancient Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine started in the 1870's as a bit of fun and relaxation for prominent Freemasons and the "Oriental" trappings were not meant to be serious- the ritual contains elements of several beliefs and cultures. It was only in the 1920's that it became the dedicated charitable service organization it is today.

So, yes, there is a Koran in the room, but you aren't expected to swear on it, or even to open it unless you feel the interest. It is only there as a traditional prop.

The Holy Bible is used in the vast majority of Lodges and other Masonic Organizations. However, you take your Obligations on the Book of Sacred Law used by your Faith and therefore most meaningful to you.

You have the right to request any book (but sometimes you will be requested to provide it unless you join a Lodge that has extensive resources).

The Shrine is an extension of the Lodge. That is, you have to be a Master Mason in order to Petition for membership. Usually (though in some areas not exclusively) you must be a member of what is known as the 'York Rite' or 'Scottish Rite'. You will learn more about these as you join the Lodge and receive the three Degrees; Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft and Master Mason.

You will undoubtedly meet a lot of Brothers who are members of these extra groups. Feel free to ask.

I am a Freemason

Here in England we do not have the Shriners.

Freemasonry is not a religious organisation, but if he wants to join,a man must believe in a Supreme being.

Holy books are used in Freemasonry,

your choice on Holy book depends on your religion, you would never be asked to do anything that would put you in conflict with your religious views or the laws of the land you live in.

We do not and will never have a copy of the Koran in the temple. Why would anybody in their right mind read that crap?
