there are a few universal human traits, all people all languages. like crying... all english speakers (australian, canadian, u.s.) groan at puns. is that a universal human trait? i mean, do people do it in other languages? like, chinese, russian, french... and so on?

Only the really contrived ones. I can recall having "themed pun runs" with my wife while we were in bed - just pick a topic (like birds, fish, names - almost anything) and go on a binge of silly puns interspersed with uncontrollable giggling.

Puns can be fun.

I'm sure that English has the worst puns. The more we groan at them, the better.
