You may also be interested in looking at the largest "Metropolitan Statistical Areas." That is a more accurate ranking of the number of people in an area. "City" population figures are just the number of people within the city limits. For instance San Francisco and Washington DC are among the top 5 or 6 Metro areas, but they are not amongst the biggest cities. You can find great information on the US Government Census website.
