do the english think of themselves as English, the Welsh as Welsh, the Scottish as Scottish or do the majority think they belong to Great Britain so therefore are firstly British, and do the Irish feel part of britain as well.

I have a passport that says I'm a British citizen. I qualify to get one that says I'm Italian. I was born in England and speak English, so you could say I'm English. But what do the labels matter? My grandparents were English, Italian, Scots and Welsh. I don't think I'm any more or any less British than my neighbours and I don't consider myself any better or any worse than people from other parts of the United Kingdom, the EU or the world.

I think it depends what situation they're in. Sometimes there's a benefit to calling yourself, say Welsh, then other times, British.

Ireland is a separate country. Northern Ireland is part of the U.K./Britain, so Northern Irish are British, but Irish Irish are Irish.

The U.K./Britain is composed of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and England. They are all considered to be their own country but form a nation called The United Kingdom.

I think myself as Scottish but i don't have a hissy fit when i have to write down my nationality as 'British'.

I have no problem being part of the UK but i will always say i am Scottish before anything else.

Most people outside the uk think British is just English and i cannot explain how annoying that is.

English , I don't know if I am correct but I feel the British ( in a historical sense , are the original tribes of Britain , the Briganti ( Iceni etc. ) , the Welsh ( Celts ) and the Picts ( Scots ) the Irish ( Celts ) and their descendants , then the Anglo Saxons and Dutch blood then English , Irish and Scots of Norse and Norman and Dutch / German blood . ( No surrender , the Prod blood in there is as much Dutch - from Billy ) We are all British in a physical sense then English / Welsh / Scottish but our roots are divided .

I'm British. I was born in England, so I'm English, but on my father's side I'm Welsh. People from the Republic of Ireland wouldn't call themselves British, even though Ireland is, geographically, a part of the 'British Isles'.

Most people in Britain think first that they are English, Irish, Scottish or Welsh; and collectively British. I certainly would refer to myself as English.

Well I'm born in England but my family tree is Welsh/Scots/Irish so I don't know if you'd say I was English at all. I generally say I'm British.

I think the majority of people born in Wales, Scotland or Ireland would always call themselves Welsh, Scottish or Irish....in my experience anyway.

I tell people i am from England... i am actually English since i was born here, however neither of my parents were (Mum - Malay, Dad -Maltese) which i feel effects who i am... i am not English in the way my friends are as my heritage isn't really here...

on another note, i find it funny how most people who are British think of their nationality first (i.e. England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales) then British but never European...

It's usually frowned upon if you don't say British... But i always say English anyway, all the different nationalities in Britan are very different anyway. Scotland even has it's own money for example...

Doesn't matter much - Go Team GB!!
