Are there any current or former members who can elaborate? The mission seems healthy and just.

I am a freemason.

Freemasonry is a social fraternity that studies morality through ritual, symbol and allegory, it makes good men better and provides more charity than any other group on the planet. But its not for everyone... It is a good organization to join though.

No churches ban membership in freemasonry, there are freemasons of every major religious tradition, protestant, catholic, luthern, presbyterian, judaism, islam, hinduism, buddhism, etc...

Damocles' explanation of freemasonry is no accurate in any way... there are very few books written by anti-masons that speak against freemasonry and those that do are writing fiction so they can cash in, literally, on the anti-mason conspiracy movement. no freemason would be involved in child pornography - this is offensive and a flat out lie.

freemasons have no position on a person's sexual preference...

the catholic church does not forbid its members to join, there are many, many catholic freemasons, including priests, bishops and cardinals.

Demands on an individuals time nowadays seems much greater then in days past. But is it a mirage. As communications have intruded into the home on an unprecedented level. Work cell phones, Blackberries and smart phones allow workers to be connected to work 24/7. prior to the 1980s and Al Gore 'inventing' the internet, people made time to do those things that enriched their lives. Many chose organizations like Freemasonry or Rotary Clubs, etc. These organizations had many facets but some of the best were the fellowship and community involvement. Fellowship that members would gather and actually talk to other people face to face as there was no Facebook status updates. Find out about friends and acquaintances and how they are doing. Make lifelong friendships based on common beliefs. As a side result networked with community leaders. One thing that most Fraternal organizations espouse for centuries is make time for others, and not just yourself. This is what is wrong today. People walk around with their faces buried in a cell phone or crack-berry and are oblivious to everything going on around them. The sentiment you refer to is so selfish and self centered. I am surprised you cannot see that. It is the job of everyone to, as far as they are able, help those members of the human family that need it and are worthy of it. No offense but at 22 your not fully cooked yet. I can see why this generation has been dubbed the "ME" generation. Joining one of these honorable organizations may not be your cup of tea, but if you make time for others especially to help in some way in your community that does not benefit you monetarily, you may discover something about yourself that you did not know before. Organizations like Freemasonry, Rotary, Lions, American Legion, etc. may seem like a waste of time to the "Me" generation but we need these organization more today then every before in history.

That stuff about "levels" is pure BS. Like most fraternities there are rituals, rules, regulations and ways to advance. It is part of the learning culture of the fraternity. No religion bans membership in freemasonry. The Roman Catholic church does not recommend it primarily because the have a competing fraternity, Knights of Columbus and encourage membership in it. Masonry has had it's share of bad members just like other groups but fundamentally it is a way for men to learn a higher standard of ethics, morality, and conduct that our current works seems to have lost sight of.

No. There is a reason most churches will not allow you to become a member of their church if you belong to a secret society like the Freemasons.

The masons are divided up into "levels". You join at level 1. You know who other level 1 masons in your lodge are. At some point, you may be approached by someone and asked if you want to join level 2. The Level 2 masons will all vote to see if you are allowed to join. They each get a black and a white marbel. A sack is passed around and each one puts in one marble. One "black ball" and you are not accepted (you have been "black balled"). If things go well, you may be invited to join level 3. And so it goes on, weeding out people at each level who do not fully embody the Freemason ideals. I want to say that there are at least 14 levels, maybe more.

Frankly, level 1 Masons are pretty harmless - they are about the same as any civic organization (Lions Club, Rotary Club, Elk's Lodge, etc.). What is questionable is the higher level Masons. If you read any books written by ex-Masons who have left the order (admittedly, probably a bit disgruntled), you get a picture that the high level Masons are a pretty nafarious bunch. Frankly, I think it is very telling that every single child pornography ring in the the U.S. that involved more than 20 people was being run by high level Freemasons. Kind of tells you what kind of morals it takes to move up in the Masons. Even if the bottom ranks are harmless and civic minded, you have to look at what these people are (unwhittingly) supporting.

I've never had any Freemason involvement, but in case you're Roman Catholic, I'd just like to warn you that the Roman Catholic Church forbids its members to become Freemasons. I'm not sure if other religious organizations have similar rules, but the Freemasons themselves say that they welcome people of all religious faiths (even Roman Catholics).

This country's founding fathers were Freemasons. Many of the whites who ran the underground railroad were free Masons. Free masons do not beleive in gay marraiges.

Damocles' story about masons being involved in child pornography rings is a lie, lie, lie. If he really believes it, he is deluded. If he is passing on the lie knowingly he should be ashamed.

Alot of intelligent people seem to come from Freemasons and it can't hurt to be part of a fellowship like them.
